We all take some time to relax and enjoy pictures from aviators flying from and to St. Maarten. So it is time to read an inspiring interview from Neshomar Anthony, flying “his” DHC6-300 Twin Otter based in St. Maarten.
Tell us Anthony, who are you and how did it all start?
Hello, everyone, my name is Neshomar Anthony, 23 years old!
Well, since I was a child, my big dream was always to become a Pilot. Every time I would go on vacation with my parents I would cry and yell at them to buy me airplane models or just something that looked like an airplane. I remember also when airplanes flew by, my head would already be up looking in the sky to see the direction and the name of the airline. Most of the times I flew on a big airplane for vacation purposes, I would always look at the pilots during the boarding process and say to my parents ”One day I want to be like them!”.
I grew up in Kralendijk Bonaire (Caribbean) in a family of 4, my mom was born in Colombia, my dad & my brother were born in Bonaire. When I was about 12 years old, I started watching online videos of aviation material on YouTube and this used to keep me quite busy every day. After searching online and asking questions, I found some information on how to become a Professional Pilot.
I was in a flight simulator group on Facebook. Being in the flight simulator group, among strangers, I met a friend, that he told me he was already a pilot flying for a company based in Bonaire. As you can imagine, from that day, the questions grew rapidly.
His brother had a flight school in Curacao, Falki Aviation Curacao and being a flight instructor himself, he could offer me ground school as well. So I gave him a call to arrange a meeting in Bonaire! The flight school was based in Curacao, but he did everything he could to fly to Bonaire, for training purposes, since we were 5-10 students interested in following this path.
Could you describe to us your life in the flight school?
Since joining Falki Aviation Curacao / Bonaire till today, I really appreciate everything they did for me, to be able to be here right now. Back in 2012 when I was 18 years old, I had my first flight, flying a real airplane (Cessna 152) and I will never forget how nervous I was. Falki Aviation prepared us to have all the required knowledge before the PPL(A), in case we went to the USA or Europe to do our training, but their license was local, so in order to get my FAA license I moved to Vero Beach Florida, where after 7 months of hard work and dedication, I ended up with the CPL(A)/ME/IR in my hands!
So what are your duties these days?
As you mentioned and in the beginning, I fly the DHC6-300 Twin Otter as a copilot, for the Company Windward Island Airways (WINAIR) based in St. Maarten!
Tell us about the people that both helped and inspired you!
My parents were always there for me, they made everything possible to give me opportunities to reach where I am right now. I really appreciate that a lot and I love them so much. Also, I would like to thank all my instructors that I had during my training and any other people that were there for me when I needed their support. THANK YOU ALL !!!
What are your future plans?
Right now I’ m very happy, flying in the Caribbean. I think it is a dream for a lot of pilots to fly in the Caribbean. There’s still a long way to go in Aviation, there’s so much more to learn. At this moment, I want to get my ATPL License and I hope in the future to have the opportunity to seat in B737 or A320 and later on in the B777.
What is your message for the aspiring pilots?
Νever give up on your dreams, most people think it’s easy but it’s not, so work hard for it. It doesn’t matter how long it will take to reach your goal. One day you will appreciate what you did to become who you are!
Thank you, Anthony, for your great and exotic story! We wish you all the best and keep on chasing your dream!
